  1. NetPresenz Quick Start

  3. This quick start guide will give you a quick walk through of how to configure your NetPresenz server.  If this guide does not answer your questions please refer to the Documentation or our Web site at <http://www.stairways.com/netpresenz/>.

  5. Note:  You should read the Security Considerations section of the NetPresenz documentation.

  7. First Steps

  9. Step 1: In the Finder, select your main hard disk.  Select Sharing… in the File menu.  Disable See Files, See Folders and Make Changes for everyone, then turn off Share this item and its contents.

  11. Step 2: Create a folder on your hard disk from which you will be serving your documents (be they WWW or FTP or Gopher).  Chose the folder then select Sharing… from the file menu. Enable Share this item and its contents and enable See Files and See Folders for Guest users.

  13. Warning: Any files or folders you place in this Guest shareable folder will be accessible and visible to the outside world.  Make sure you have disabled Guest access to the rest of your hard disk.

  15. Step 3: Go to the Control Panels folder and open the Sharing Setup control panel.  Click on Start if File Sharing is not currently active.  Close the Sharing Setup control panel.

  17. Step 4: Go to the Users and Groups control panel.  Double click on the Guests icon.  Enable Allow Guest access.  Close the the Users and Groups control panel.

  19. Step 5: If you have not already configured Internet Config, launch Internet Config and fill in your email address.  Quit Internet Config, saving any changes.  If you do not have Internet Config, you can get it from <ftp://ftp.stairways.com/stairways/>.

  21. Step 6: Run NetPresenz Setup Now

  23. To run an FTP server

  25. Step 7: Click on FTP Setup.
  26. Step 8: Select Read Only from the Pop Up menu for the Guests file access.
  27. Step 9: Make sure Remote Mounting is disabled on all users.
  28. Step 10: Click the Save button.

  30. To run a Web server

  32. Step 7: Click on WWW Setup.
  33. Step 8: Select the WWW Enabled checkbox.
  34. Step 9: Click the Choose button and select the directory you wish users to see when they first connect (this is the directory containing the index.html file that will be served when a user first connects).  The directory should be the folder you created in Step 2, or a directory inside that folder.
  35. Showcase: To view the Showcase correctly select the Showcase directory 
  36. in the description above.  You may need to move the Showcase directory in to the folder you created in Step 2.
  37. Step 10: Click the save button.

  39. To run a Gopher Server

  41. Step 7: Click on Gopher Setup.
  42. Step 8: Select the Gopher Enabled checkbox.
  43. Step 9: Click the Choose button and select the directory you wish users to see when they first connect.  The directory should be the folder you created in Step 2, or a directory inside that folder.
